Program Description: Research misconduct and ethical violations are more historically common than most realize in our society. There are those that are well known in the research community from the Nazi War Crimes to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. But, other stories exist. One entitled “Three Identical Strangers” was recently highlighted by an award-winning documentary at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. This fascinating story unfolds about a set of triplets who were adopted into separate households at six months of age. The parents were never told of the existence of the other siblings. They were also not told that they were all, the children and the parents, in a project studying the idea of nature versus nurture. This session will discuss case study, the ethics of the research, and the current standing of these men as we know it now.
Upon completion of this Seminar, attendees should be able to:
- Describe the basic ethical principles of informed consent, protection of vulnerable participants, and release of information, according to the Belmont Report and the Declaration of Helsinki.
- Discuss current thoughts and attitudes of research involving children and other vulnerable populations in research.
- Identify the risks associated with research when done with deception and failure to provide proper disclosure.
