North Texas Chapter: COVID-19: Looking at Vaccine Development and Distribution, Scientific Data Dissemination, & Access to New Therapies Through an Ethical Lens

Speaker:
  • Alison Bateman-House, PHC, MPH MA, Assistant Professor, Division of Medical Ethics, Department of Population Health, Grossman School of Medicine, NYU Langone Health, New York, NY
Program Description:

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted clinical research in numerous ways, including by speeding up the transition to virtual trials and by focusing unprecedented public attention on drug and vaccine development. In this talk, I will focus, from a bioethics perspective, on 3 topics: development and distribution of vaccines against Covid-19, scientific data dissemination, and access to new therapies, both proven and investigational. I will also address what aspects of Covid-19 research can and should be applied to other diseases.

Upon completion of this Seminar, attendees should be able to:

  1. Identify key ethical issues in the development and distribution of vaccines against
    Covid-19
  2. Apply ethical reasoning to evaluate current practices of disseminating scientific data
  3. Understand how the Covid-19 experience has deepened prior concerns about access to new therapies both proven and investigational
