Virginia Chapter: Ethical and Practical Considerations for eConsent and Digital Tools in Clinical Research

Event Description:
Informed consent is a crucial part of clinical trials by ensuring the participant can exercise their autonomy free from coercion and with sufficient information and comprehension of what participation means. Traditionally, it involved paper forms and direct conversations with healthcare providers. eConsent ethically empowers participants by boosting comprehension through multimedia (videos, diagrams) for clearer understanding, allowing review in low-stress home settings for better autonomy, and offering interactive features that facilitate truly informed voluntary decisions. With all of these benefits, potential issues like data privacy, digital literacy gaps, and ensuring identity verification remain key ethical considerations to manage.

Speakers:
  • Andrea Mohr, Manager of Human Subjects Research Ethics and Education, Carilion Human Research Protections Office
  • Heather Ferreri, Director, IRB for Health Sciences Research, UVA
  • Melissa Gottke, IRB Chairperson, Advarra IRB
