Program Description: The Common Rule was established in 1991 to provide a set of rules to act as the platform for institutions to engage in safe and ethical human subjects. The first major revisions to the regulations since their establishment are just over the horizon. The revisions, at their core, are intended to modernize and refresh the regulations to accommodate the contemporary human subjects research environment. Moreover, they intend to build flexibility into the regulations to adjust to the ever changing scientific and regulatory landscape. This discussion is intended to provide an overview of the changes, the potential effects of the
changes, and the areas of flexibility that may differ from institution to institution.

Upon completion of this discussion, attendees should be able to understand:
  1. The major changes to the Common Rule and when they may apply
  2. The flexibility under the regulations that institutions may choose to exercise
  3. Questions for your HRPP and IRB leadership about your local institution has chosen to implement the changes
Speaker, Adam McClintock, has spent over 13 years in a variety ofroles in human research protections, including 12 years in the Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) at The Ohio State University. Most recently, he joined the HRPP at the OhioHealth Research & Innovation Institute. He has experience applying the regulations to a wide variety of investigator initiated studies, large multi-site collaborative trials, as well as social & behavioral sciences research. He has experience training and developing IRB professionals, with a focus on working with researchers and research staff in a customer service oriented manner.
