Program Description: The webinar replay will review the various privacy and security issues and implications that need to be considered when the research project involves the use of a connected device, app and/or social media. This would include the issues for IRB consideration, subject informed consent and compliance with the HIPAA regulations. It will review the interplay between different regulations that are implicated in any research project around the specific topics of privacy and information security. The presentation will provide practical considerations and propose methods for addressing those considerations in a proactive manner that considers the perspective of all parties involved.

Upon completion of this Webinar replay, attendees should be able to:
  • Understand the privacy and security issues with the use of connected devices, apps and social media in research
  • Understand the questions to ask when the research project is considering the use of connected devices, apps and/or social media.
  • Improve the quality of documentation for research projects using connected devices, apps and/or social media.
Speaker Marti Arvin is a well-known healthcare compliance professional with extensive experience and expertise. Her current position is Vice President of Audit Strategy for CynergisTek, Inc. a top-ranked information security, privacy and compliance consulting firm focused on healthcare. She has focused her career primarily on compliance issues associated with academic medicine. She has been a chief compliance and privacy officer at four academic medical centers and a for-profit hospital system. She has served as an expert witness for privacy and information security cases. She is an adjunct professor in the LLM and MJ programs at the Loyola University School of Law in Chicago.
