Program Description:
You have just been diagnosed with late-stage cancer and life will never be the same. The journey begins as you try to decide between of care and clinical trials. Can you imagine yourself a clinical research participant? Do you "hope" for a cure; hope that you will be the one on the "right side of the curve"? These and other patient-oriented questions will be discussed by a panel of experts. will focus on the impact these issues have on trials recruitment, and compliance efforts. The panel members will explore the "white coat syndrome" - therapeutic misconception when the physician and investigator role is played by one individual.
Panel members will evaluate the investigator's responsibilities and professionalism and provide tools by which compliance with the research protocol does not compromise patient care and the protection of human subjects who participate in research. Case studies will be presented for debate among the attendees.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the effect of hope and autonomy as it impacts research subjects’ participation in oncology clinical trials.
- Explain “therapeutic misconception” and its role in patient, caregiver and investigator/physician decision-making process.
- Provide details of the underlying ethics and potential conflicts regarding investigator responsibilities and professionalism as it pertains to subject recruitment into trials for oncologic or other life-threatening disease therapies.
