Program Description:
We are all looking for qualified and willing volunteers to participate in clinical trials. We want those volunteers to represent the clinical population defined in the protocol and the demographics of the population of each local area in order for the clinical trial results to be most valid. Some demographic groups have historically been less willing to participate in research; this talk explores what factors we can address to facilitate diverse research participation.

The research presented in this webinar reviews case studies which identify the conditions that could potentially influence willingness to participate in a clinical research study. This was a one-year convenience sample, pilot study in which CRCs collected information from every potential research subject’s consent conversation including demographics, people involved, and location. The study team also compared required study activities such as number of visits, invasiveness, potential health benefit, transportation, payment etc. for the reported clinical research protocols.

The intent is to use this data to help identify barriers to clinical research participation. Once these barriers are understood, we may be able to make targeted initiatives to make research participation easier.

Upon completion of this Webinar, attendees should be able to:
  • Consider necessity and ethics of including representative population of research participants
  • Present study results evaluating factors which may impact consent decisions
  • Discuss steps which could improve diverse study participation
