Program Description: In the summer of 2017, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued a decision in the Shinal v. Toms in the interpretation of the Medical Care Availability and Reduction of Errors (MCARE) Act. Institutions have worked to address the ruling of the Court as it affect clinical research consent. This presentation will review the current regulations, the ruling of the PA Supreme Court, and how institutions are changing practice.

Upon completion of this event, attendees should be able to:
  • Interpret the intention of informed consent.
  • Describe the PA Supreme Court decision in the case of Shinal v. Toms as it applies to the MCARE Act.
  • Differentiate between requires federal and local regulations regarding the informed consent process in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
